Maria da Conceição Lopes is an Associated Professor in the Department of History, Archaeology and Arts at the University of Coimbra where she has been a faculty member since 1987. She is also the main coordinator of the Research Center of Archaeology, Arts and Heritage (CEAACP) which has developed projects in Portugal and abroad, in places such as the Magreb, Syria, Iraq, Angola and Brazil. Maria da Conceição Lopes completed her PhD in Classical archaeology in 2000. Her research interests lie in the area of urbanism and cultural contacts in the ancient World, having focused in the Hellenistic and Parthian periods in Mesopotamia where she was responsible for the Portuguese project in Tell Beydar (Syria). She has also been exploring the subject of Historic Urban Landscapes with Beja (Portugal) as her main laboratory. At the moments she is also coordinating a project in Mbanza Kongo (Angola). Since 2014, Maria da Conceição Lopes is also a member of the Unesco World Heritage Committee.
